all-season fruit

In early November, I was gifted with a nice space of time on a Saturday afternoon to sketch for fun—not something I get to do often. But on this day, Mark and I were in Tennessee watching best friends’ kids for the weekend, and being a much colder day, an afternoon to stay inside to play games, watch tv, and draw was just right!

With lots of markers to choose from, I didn’t have a plan, but in my head, kept thinking of the fruits of the Spirit we read about in Galatians. It’s one of my favorite passages. So I picked up some muted colors and began vertically scripting out each fruit in a different color.

By the time I practiced it a few times, it seemed like it could easily take on the form of a Christmas tree, and I loved it! I was excited to get home and see how it would translate in Illustrator. When I did, I opened Font Book, tested quite a few options, and landed on this condensed, all-caps sans serif—which was totally different from the soft script I had been practicing!

I know some enjoy simple black and white with a pop of color, so I thought it’d be fun to do a version like that and one in more streamlined, monochromatic shades and tints of green.

It’s always fun to me to see how art takes shape from concept to finished product. I hadn’t done anything like this in a while, something just for me to create from scratch for fun. But I had again found myself praying for something to either design or share here—and this fun project answered both :)

In our day-to-day, there are so often many distractions or things we just have to do. This was a nice weekend break that gave way to new creativity for me. I hope it encourages you too, to take opportunity when you can to step away for a bit, out of your routine. When you do, you may also discover something fun and new to share!

And if this verse is a favorite and you’d enjoy keeping this encouragement in your home during the Christmas season, then please check out this download here in my Etsy shop.

Merry Christmas! :)
